Dear Admissions Committee,

I am applying to the International Business School at Beijing Foreign Studies University because, after two years of research and soul-searching, I am convinced it is the only place in the world that can give me the exact combination I need to completely change my life and build the future I dream of: a top-tier business education, mastery of multiple languages, real access to the Chinese market, and all of this at a price that a middle-class boy Larkana, Sindh can actually afford.

Let me be honest: I come a small city in Pakistan most people have never heard of. My family is not rich my father runs a small tailors shop. But the moment I understood how the world really works, I knew two things: (1) the future of money, technology and power is shifting to Asia, and (2) whoever speaks Chinese + English + another foreign language fluently will eat everyone else’s lunch in the next 20 years. I don’t want to watch that happen the sidelines in Pakistan. I want to be right in the middle of it.

That’s why BFSU-IBS feels like it was built for someone exactly like me.

First, the language is my superpower. I already speak Urdu, Sindhi, decent English, working on Mandarin by myself every single day on Duolingo. At BFSU I can continue my business degree in English while taking university-level courses in Chinese.I want to graduate speaking fluent Mandarin and at least one more language. I want recruiters at Alibaba, Huawei, ByteDance, or Goldman Sachs Asia to look at my CV and say “this guy is dangerous” because I can negotiate contracts in Beijing, Shanghai, Dubai, and Karachi without a translator.

Second, cost. Let’s not pretend money doesn’t matter. A business degree in the UK, US, Singapore or even Hong Kong would leave me with debt I would be paying until I’m 40. At IBS the tuition is less than one-tenth of many of those places, and there are real scholarships for Pakistani students. That means when I graduate I will have zero debt, savings in the bank, and four years of real Beijing work experience instead of student loans.

Third, location. Beijing is decisions are made. Zhongguancun is 20 utes campus. The headquarters of Xiaomi, Baidu, and half the unicorns I want to work for are nearby. I have already seen on LinkedIn how many IBS students get internships at the Big 4, CICC, Citic, or Tencent their second year. I want that exact path.

Finally, and maybe most importantly, I need a new environment to become a new person. Back home I sometimes feel stuck, surrounded by the same thinking, the same limitations. Beijing is loud, fast, cold in winter, and full of opportunity. I want to wake up every morning knowing that if I work hard enough, I can end up any in the world. BFSU-IBS is my ticket out and my ticket up at the same time.

I am not applying to BFSU because it is “good enough.” I am applying because, for a boy Dokri, Larkana who dreams bigger than his postcode, it is perfect.

I am ready to work harder than anyone else in my class. I am ready to freeze in Beijing winters, eat hotpot every day if I have to, and stay in the library until it closes. All I need is the chance.
